How I live Now by Meg Rosoff Book HELP!?

I absolutely adored this book! However, I have to write an essay where I need to make a connection between myself and one of the characters. Could anyone who read the book give me some advice as to how to approach this? I am not in love with my cousin as have never been forced to survive a war? I have no clue how to relate! Please help! thanks so much!
