What kind of camera should a soon to be photography student purchase?

I am a soon to be photography student and I am more than curious as to what kind of camera I should purchase or what kind of specifications I should look for in a camera. Also, what other equipment (lenses etc.) would be most suitable? I would also be more than thankful if you answer why that particular item would be suitable.
