Would an iPad 2 work as a laptop?

Im I high school student (sophomore) and I a shopping for a laptop, but a iPad is a lot cheaper. If I got the keyboard dock, and the camera USB/sd card plug, could I easily use it instead? At my school I type a lot of essays, and I'm taking photography next year. And if so, what memory do you recommend? Thanks
